To stay in one place, part 2

We prefer to forge ahead, to go West, as if tomorrow will not have a yesterday. Now that the West has been won, and all has been lost, we go even farther: to Mars, dooming ourselves to repeat the same patterns. Let us instead tarry for a moment, reflect on our history, on ourselves. Let us reconsider the beliefs propelling us into the void.

Take climate change. We are beginning to acknowledge our responsibility for it, a promising step. But our intended response is to fight it with the same means that wrought it:  technological innovation. The task probably does require the use of new or developing technology — and so much more. If we only develop the technology, we will not succeed. We need to develop the beliefs required for living in harmony with nature and with each other.
