Until only recently in the span of human history, most people took for granted the moral and legal permissibility of treating other people, e.g., Africans and women, as property. Most of us now find such practices reprehensible and we struggle to understand how more people did not condemn them in earlier times, which leads us to wonder… For which practices that we condone today will future generations look back at us aghast at our ignorance and cowardice? Perhaps other forms of domination over people’s labor, such as subsistence-wage employment. Perhaps other forms of domestication, such as raising livestock or even owning pets. Perhaps other forms of property ownership that permit people to consume and pollute natural resources that should be protected for the good of all life.
