Trump’s tweets (along with much of social and news media) play the role of the U.S. Handicapper General in Kurt Vonnegut’s short story Harrison Bergeron, in which persons of above average intelligence are required to wear a radio transmitter that screeches every 20 seconds in order to prevent the formation of thoughts. And just like the weights and masks that ballerinas must wear to prevent people from feeling bad about themselves by comparison, Trump’s deprecations of immigrants, women, anyone who is different from the perspective of his base are designed to bring everyone down to the level of the lowest common denominator.
