And upon realizing the historically contingent nature of this system, we can be the ones to change it. Consider, for example, how our vilification of socialism originated in fear of Soviet Russia and became entrenched under the propaganda and repression of the Cold War. Now we have the opportunity to distinguish between historical instantiations of socialism, from totalitarian regimes like the USSR, China, and North Korea to social democracies like those of Northern Europe.
