Trump makes transparent so much of the unfairness that has been latent in our political system for decades. The mere existence of this paradigm has been bad enough, but there may be something even more insidious explaining why Trump can now get away with making it so overt: because people expect nothing better.
Perhaps it is not the case, as I have often told myself, that people are oblivious, ignorant, duped. Perhaps they are just resigned: they do not believe there is a better way. They believe there is no such thing as good government, that rulers are always corrupt, inept, or power-hungry and so may as well be transparent about it, rather than adding insult to injury by paying lip service to some high-minded egalitarian ideals.
